A message of gratitude
I would like to thank everybody who voted for me.
We came third with some 5800 votes. I think that this is a very respectable result.
I would also like to thank, most sincerely, my team of helpers and supporters, so ably led by Councillor David Thornewell.
Finally, I must thank the local branch of the party for having selected me to be their candidate. For me personally it was a most worthwhile experience.
Although the Liberal Democrats did not gain an increase in parliamentary seats, we have achieved a potentially strong bargaining position. As a result, we may succeed in one of our most precious goals - a fairer system of voting. If this comes about, the 2010 General Election will go down in history as heralding a new era in British politics. We will be justified in feeling proud that we played a part in making our political system fairer for every citizen.
With regard to the present financial crisis, the Liberal Democrats will contribute to its resolution in every way we can.
With best wishes
John McClintock
